Fire and Ice
After finishing a hike through a layer of fresh snow, I stood numb in a large open field and witnessed a fiery winter sunset, which ultimately inspired this piece. Creating the effect of vibrant light with pigment is incredibly challenging. While it's always important to be aware of subtle value shifts in color temperature, I attempted to push the luminosity further by placing the colors in such a way as to create the visual effect of simultaneous contrast. This creates the illusion of a shimmering line between a warm and cool color when they are at the right value and intensity. This piece challenged everything I thought I knew about color theory in order to capture the essence of this winter landscape and its mesmerizing beauty.
