Gifted Flowers

This painting is oil on canvas, made completely from life over the course of about 5 short winter afternoons. I was gifted this beautiful bouquet of flowers for Valentine's Day, so I bought a glass vase and set them up in my studio. While I was rearranging and cutting the flowers to place them in the water, I realized my scissors complimented the reds in the roses and tulips quite beautifully, so I kept them in my composition. This painting captures a very specific moment in the exchange of flowers- not the handing off of a bouquet, but represents the moments of care that go into readying the flowers for their next phase of life in the home of the recipient.
