Afternoon In Provincetown
"Afternoon In Provincetown" was inspired by small plein-air sketches made on location in August 2021. This picturesque Cape Cod location has a long history of attracting artists. I did a handful of studies (in acrylic) during my visit, with the plan to create something larger (in oil) back in the studio when I returned home to Richmond, Virginia.
The mid-day sun was causing a dramatic glare to the roof of City Hall and casting a sharp shadow. The strong contrasts of light and shadow are what first caught my eye on location, and were the main focus of the plein-air study. The figures were a complete invention, cobbled together from various photo references, which also assisted in helping me remember architectural details back in the studio.
