Freesia in Cut Glass Vase
Watercolor on 156 lb cold press Arches paper. The yellow Freesia w/deep red markings was a bright, lovely representation of warmer months. I wanted to capture the moment. I highlighted the 3 arching flowers across the top and blurred the background flowers. I love the life, light and reflections of glass and wanted to bring all those elements to life by placing it all on a black painted background. I made an underpainting of red/gold and then mixed a combination of colors to create the overpainted black. The marble turntable contains colors within the glass and the reds of the freesia. The fallen petal on the marble turntable reminded me of the brevity of life and our responsibility to appreciate, respect and embrace life and all its richest moments. Making the painting bigger than life because the beauty given to us by nature is bigger than life.
